Thompson Racing Finds the Podium in Monterey
Monterey, Calif., (May 11, 2013) - Thompson Racing finished a successful weekend at the The IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with a third place finish from driver Colin Thompson.
The team started the weekend with a strong performance in the Friday practice and qualifying session, which resulted in a fourth place starting position for race one.
The drivers put on a show as they battled fiercely with one another; the Philadelphia, PA. native worked his way to second place where he was confronted with holding off the rest of the field. In the end, Thompson’s tenacious driving earned him a hard fought third place finish.
The podium finish left the team in good spirits and with high expectations for the next day’s race.
The temperature rose on day two, significantly changing race conditions.
Thompson started the race in the fifth position. The 19-year-old had a clean start and continued his battle for another podium finish, with multiple position changes throughout the race. The lap time difference between the top 10 drivers was just under a second.
On the final lap things started to unfold for Thompson Racing. The throttle cable of the No. 14 car failed leaving Thompson stranded on top of the world famous corkscrew. Thompson had been in position to walk away with a top 10 finish
Overall, even with trouble in race two, the weekend was considered a success for the GT3 Cup Challenge rookie driver.
Thompson Racing will look to take the lessons learned to the next race at Watkins Glen International Raceway on June 28-30 for Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen.
